About CHEER
Community-Driven, Policy-Relevant Research
At CHEER we seek to understand communities’ health priorities and the impacts of actions related to energy and environment on the health and wellbeing for local neighborhoods and communities. We listen and engage with community partners and leaders, decision makers, and other stakeholders to develop resources and tools based on these priorities to better understand the health benefits and support informed policy making.

The Center is organized into four Cores
Community Engagement Core (CEC)
Our Community Engagement Core is key to understanding the needs and priorities of impacted communities in Milwaukee. They are responsible for maintaining and deepening relationships with our Community Advisory Board (CAB) leaders and research partners across CHEER to ensure that research questions, tools, and other resources will meet these needs to support community goals.
Administrative Core
Our Administrative Core supports the Center in three main ways: 1) evaluating the effectiveness of community engagement across the center to identify pain points and support course correction, 2) administering the Center’s pilot grant program to explore and expand research capacity and opportunities in line with the community needs, and 3) supporting the Center’s growth and engagement through seeking new partnerships, facilitating external advisory committee oversight, grant seeking and reporting.
Energy & Air Quality Health Impacts Team
Our Research Project Team is responsible for evaluating the impact of relevant energy scenarios (or policy choices) on health outcomes based on the community’s interests and needs. They explore specific impacts to energy systems from specific policies and or other climate actions and how these translate into emissions that impact air quality and specific pollutants at the neighborhood level.
Data Science Core
Our Data Science Core (DSC) supports the development of tools and resources for data collection, storage, analysis, and visualization. Drawing on FAIR data sharing principles and collaborative input from the Community Engagement Core and Community Advisory Board they are committed to creating tools that are usable to support the collection, and dissemination of data to support informed policy making.
